Huda Sha’arawi

Huda Sha’arawi (1879–1947) was a pioneering Egyptian feminist, nationalist, and anti-colonial activist. In 1923, she founded the Egyptian Feminist Union and made a bold statement by removing her veil in public, a gesture that became a symbol of women’s emancipation.

A fierce opponent of British colonial rule, Huda also led women’s political activism during Egypt’s anti-colonial struggle.

I have always believed in the possibility of a fertile cooperation between the women of all the continents-since we share the same ideals: to build a better world, based on justice, equality, and brotherly understanding between all peoples.
